The Backrooms

ROLE

Programmer, Level Designer, and Sound Designer

DESCRIPTION

I got caught up in the Backrooms creepypasta when it first surfaced around the internet. It's very similar to the SCP universe with its bizzare properties that seem to defy what we know about the way the universe works. With an infinite amount of possibilities, developing a game with these quirky behaviors offers unlimited creativity and unique mechanics.

LEVEL DESIGN

Level 0: Tutorial Level

Level 0 is the first level players are greeted to when they play the game. It is a series of winding hallways that seem to go on forever (because they do). This level takes full advantage of the level generation system to provide and endless map layout for players. Additionally, if players backtrack they will quickly become disoriented because they will notice the way they came from is completely different than when they walked through it!  This adds to the mysterious feeling of this level which introduces the unique and random properties that many backrooms levels have.

Level 1: The Habitable Zone

Level_1_Dec_23

Level 1 is the second level players will often encounter. While there are no threats on this level, players will be greeted with large and empty spaces opposite of what they just experienced in Level 0. Level 1 is also home to "The Hub" which has doors with symbols on them. Each door takes the player to a unique Backrooms level based on the symbol on each door. However, the player will need to find the key for the level they're looking for in order to use a door.

Level 2: Pipe Dreams

Level_2_Smiler

Level 2 is much more intimidating than any other level the player is yet to face. Level 2 consists of long, narrow, and dark hallways which can only be illuminated by the player's flashlight. However, players must be careful of using their flashlights as an entity known as the Smiler is known to roam this level's hallways. Smilers can track the location of all light sources and will immediately know the player's location once their flashlight has been turned on. Smilers hide in the dark and their physique is yet to be determined. All that is known about them is their faces can occasionally be seen in the darkness. They have white eyes and a very large cheeky smile. Players can tell when they are close based on their laughter in the distance.
